The European Parliament is a body of the European Union whose members are elected directly by EU citizens.

Members of the European Parliament are elected in direct elections, on the basis of universal, free and equal suffrage with a secret ballot for a period of five years.

Members of the European Parliament are elected for a five-year term that begins with the opening of the first session of the European Parliament after the elections, and can be extended or shortened in accordance with the decision of the Council of the European Union on determining the new election period.

Active and passive right to vote

Members of the European Parliament are elected, on the basis of universal and equal suffrage, by all Croatian citizens who have the right to vote.

Under the same conditions that apply to Croatian citizens, members of the European Parliament can be elected by citizens of another EU member state who have a residence or temporary residence in the Republic of Croatia according to the Aliens Act, if they submit a request for entry in the voter register to the competent body that maintains the voter registration no later than 30 days before election day.

A Croatian citizen with the right to vote can be elected as a member of the European Parliament.

Citizens of another EU member state who have a residence or temporary residence in the Republic of Croatia according to the Law on Foreigners can be elected as a member of the European Parliament if they meet the conditions for exercising the right to stand as a candidate prescribed by the Law on the Election of Representatives from the Republic of Croatia to the European Parliament.

Members of the European Parliament are elected by proportional representation and preferential voting. Voting is done on the ballot on which the lists of candidates are listed. The territory of the Republic of Croatia, including polling stations outside the borders of the Republic of Croatia, is one electoral unit.

Voters can vote only once and only for one list of candidates. On the ballot, the voter can mark one candidate with an advantage over the other candidates on the list for which he voted (preferred vote).

The right to participate in the division for a member of the European Parliament is achieved by lists that receive at least 5% of the votes cast in the elections.
