The President of the Republic of Croatia is elected on the basis of universal and equal suffrage directly in the elections by secret ballot, for a mandate of five years.

Candidates for the President of the Republic of Croatia can be nominated by:

Candidates must collect at least 10,000 signatures from voters supporting his/her candidacy. Each voter can support only one candidate with his/her signature.

Voting for the election of the President of the Republic of Croatia is carried out at polling stations in the territory of the Republic of Croatia and at polling stations in the headquarters of diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Croatia. Voting lasts continuously from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., when the polling station closes.

The results of the election for the President of the Republic of Croatia are determined by the State Election Commission of the Republic of Croatia based on the results of voting at all polling stations.

The President of the Republic of Croatia is elected by a majority electoral system. The candidate who receives more than 50% of the votes of the voters who voted is elected president of the Republic of Croatia. If no candidate gets the necessary majority in the first election round, a further election is held in the second election round.
